Lions Club triathlon draws 131 racers

Athletes looking for a multi-sport challenge found it at the Mattappoisett Lions Club 2013 Triathlon, which drew 131 participants on July 14.

Now in its 24th year, the race has become a summer tradition and is held the weekend before Mattapoisett’s Harbor Days.

Race announcer Kim Camara has been part of the race since the beginning.

“The first year I announced, I did it from the porch of the Mattapoisett Inn with nothing but a pen and piece of paper in the pouring rain,” Camara, who operates Yesteryear Cyclery in New Bedford, said.

This year, the weather cooperated.

“We couldn’t ask for a better day. It’s starting to heat up now but a lot of runners are coming off the course,” Camara said at 10 a.m. as the temperature climbed into the 80s.

He announced the names of triathletes as they transitioned from the cycling portion to the running leg of the race in the town beach’s parking lot.

Individuals and relay teams were welcome to compete in the race that consisted of a quarter-mile swim, 10-mile bike and three-mile run.

The “Rum Runners” relay team, Elizabeth Davis, Karen Martin, and Cathy Wolfe, tackled the legs of the race separately.

“We're weekend warriors,” Martin, who swam, said. “Not couch warriors,” Wolfe, a cyclist, said and then laughed.

The triathlon is a fundraiser for the Lions Club. Money from entry fees paid by participants help the club serve the community.
