Loft School to commemorate 50th anniversary with celebration
This year, the Loft School is celebrating its 50th anniversary of teaching local preschool kids through a model that encourages parent participation and giving every child a voice.
A party in honor of the occasion will be held at the Mattapoisett YMCA on May 14 from 7 to 11 p.m.
Director Lil Shani said the Loft School got its start, well, in a loft. Some of the founders were also parishioners of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church. When the school outgrew its original home, it leased space from the church, where it has been ever since.
The small preschool has grown to three classrooms, in which all students receive a “gentle education,” said Shani.
“Children are playing through most of the [lessons],” she said.
In addition to the teachers, the cooperative aspect of the school means parents are the owners and also contribute in the classroom.
“We tap into parent’s special talents,” Shani said. “They’re very involved and invested in their child’s education. You don’t see that everywhere.”
Shani said the school has also adhered to the “social curriculum,” even before it was popular. The goal of that teaching is active listening that helps students process and explain their emotions and thoughts, “giving every child and every person here a voice,” explained the director.
“In the early years, that is the most important piece,” said Shani. “Without the social piece, children are unable sometimes to learn everything else. They’re going to be hindered by their social skills later in life if they can’t advocate for themselves.”
Such teaching has set the Loft School apart and also contributed to its longevity for five decades, and Shani and the school’s parents believe that’s something to celebrate.
Shani hopes those who share their love of the school will come to the anniversary party. Tickets are $65 and are available at the Marion General Store and Isabelle’s in Mattapoisett. There will be music, a cash bar and a raffle at the event.
