Marion COA celebrates a year at the Music Hall

Aug 3, 2016

On Monday, the Marion Council on Aging celebrated one year at the Music Hall with a lunch and music from Steve Caddick & Avalon.

In 2014, the Friends of the Marion Council on Aging commissioned a study regarding the unmet needs of the town's aging population. The Center for Social and Demographic Research on Aging Gerontology Institute and UMass Boston, in a series of three focus groups, found that there was a need for a dedicated space in which to offer programs and services for elders.

The Music Hall, which is owned by the town, became that place, and more than 60 people gathered to celebrate the social programming that has taken place there in the past year.

COA Director Heather Sylvia said a senior center is still the COA's goal, but for now Mondays at the Music Hall will continue to be a hub of activity.

Chair Yoga begins at 10 a.m., lunch at 11:45 a.m. and a lecture series at 12:45 p.m. Private visits with Town Nurse Kathy Downey are also available from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. each week.

In September, a Memory Café will begin every Wednesday at the Music Hall with programming geared to those in the early stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s and their care providers and family.
