UPDATE: Marion election results in, Toby Burr wins Select Board
MARION — Election results are in with Carelton Toby Burr winning the Select Board position and Margaret McSweeny winning another term on the Old Rochester Regional School Committee.
Marion Town Clerk Katrina Desroches said that 847 residents cast their vote in this year's election.
Burr won the open Select Board position with 368 votes.
Incumbent Norman Hills had 266 votes and George “TJ” Walker had 201 votes.
McSweeny won the Old Rochester Regional School Committee position with 578 votes against Katharine McAuley who received 174 votes.
Burr said he was grateful for the win even though he did not receive a simple majority.
“I'm very grateful people in the town of Marion have given me a lot of support and confidence and chosen me to serve for the next three years,” Burr said.
The newly elected Select Board member was immediately sworn in after results were counted.
Burr said he is excited to resolve the issues with Island Wharf and tackle affordable housing in Marion.
Hills said he will now have more free time on his hands and congratulated Burr and Walker.
“I should thank all the voters that came out today, no matter who they voted for,” Hills said.
Walker congratulated Burr and Hills on their campaign efforts and Burr on his election win.
“I appreciate the confidence that a substantial number of voters showed for me and I intend to continue my efforts to support the best interests of Marion on issues going forward,” Walker said.
McSweeny said she is grateful and honored for her reelection.
“I'm so grateful to the voters for showing up today, local elections only matter because people show up for them,” McSweeny said.
She said she recognizes her responsibility serving the community and looks to work collaboratively with the community.
“I'm just so lucky that my community is giving me the chance and I hope that they keep know that I am listening and I'm here for them to share their concerns and their wishes,” McSweeny said.
McAuley said she wanted to congratulate McSweeny on her win and thank those who supported McAuley’s campaign.
She said her work is not finished and she plans to serve the community in a different capacity.
“It's just now my goal is to shift gears, whether that's as a parent or as a school committee member, it's just to ensure that our kids are getting the best education that they possibly can in our district,” McAuley said.
The other elected positions were unopposed.
Albin R Johnson III will serve a three year term on the Board of Health.
Patrician Ann DeCosta will continue serving on the Board of Assessors.
The three open positions on the Planning Board will be filled by Ryan Burke, Ann Vorhees Morgan and Sean C. Sweeney.
Mary Beauregard and Nicole Nye McGaffey will both continue to serve on the Marion School Committee.
