Mural competition coming to Marion to decorate Town Hall
MARION — A mural competition to decorate the main entrance of the newly constructed Marion Town Hall will take place this March.
Town Administrator Geoffrey Gorman announced the competition at a Tuesday, Jan. 6 Select Board meeting.
Submissions will open in March, after the official rules are finalized and announced. Artists would have one month to submit original designs.
The Select Board will then review submissions through mid-April and choose three to five ideas for Marion residents to vote on.
The town’s favorite mural will be printed and placed inside the Town Hall during the summer.
While regulations and guidelines will be finalized later, the competition will only be open to adult artists ages 18 and up.
Gorman specified people may only submit one original design per person, it must not contain any political, commercial or offensive material, and must be submitted in a digital format.
“We're looking at mural concepts for the installation of items celebrating Marion’s Maritime heritage, history, and civic spirit,” Gorman said.
After residents questioned if artists must be from Marion, Gorman said he would leave the decision up to the Select Board.
Select Board member John Hoagland suggested Gorman’s original February deadline was too early to take mural suggestions since the Town Hall construction will not be completed until August.
Gorman agreed to push the starting date back and will finalize the March date soon.
