Marion residents unite for spring cleaning
MARION – Drivers along Point Road slowed to honk or flash a “thumbs up” at Ann Hibbert and her son, Adam, as they picked up trash along the side of the street.
The Hibberts woke up early on Saturday morning to participate in the Marion Annual Cleanup, organized by Marion Cub Scout Pack 32 and Boy Scouts Troop 32.
“We’re not with the Boy Scouts,” Hibbert said. “We just came out to help.”
The Cub Scouts started their day at the Sippican Woods, picking up over a dozen bags of trash.
The Scouts’ organizer, Kristen Saint-Don Campbell, said that they started the day at 8:30 a.m. with about 50-60 people, and expect to have 150 participate by the end of the day.
She said Select Board Chairman Norman Hills showed up and took the “dangerous spot” along the exit ramp to the highway, where he’d be close to speeding cars.
In addition to the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, the Girl Scouts also showed up to help out.
The scouts also encouraged residents to clean out their closets for donations to the Acushnet-based charity GiftsToGive, which had a truck present at Washburn Park collecting new and used children’s items.
Saint-Don Campbell says that she took over the event seven years ago, when it was previously organized by the Sippican Lands Trust and the Garden Club.
“They handed me a vest and a huge binder and I got to work,” she said.
