Marion Social Club serves up 1,300 clams for boiled lunch
With nine bushels of clams served and an eclectic bunch of raffle prizes up for grabs, the Marion Social Club’s annual clam boil brought out a full house of lunch guests on Sunday.
More than 175 people attended the event, which in addition to a hot meal, included a raffle of prizes donated by club members. The prizes ranged from a couple of bottles of wine to a floral arrangement to a bag full of scratch tickets and a Winnie the Pooh bear.
“We love doing this,” said club member Joe Ayres. “We feed people and get money for scholarships for the schools. It’s all volunteers that help do this.”
The clam boil was just one of the more than half dozen events that the club hosts throughout the year, including a chicken barbeque in the summer and two clambakes.
The clambakes tend to bring the crowds out in droves, Ayres said.
“It’s are already sold out before the tickets go on sale,” Ayres said. “We do it all old-fashioned by digging a hole in the ground. We have more than 230 people at those events.”
The club will host its next event, a steak dinner, on March 3.
