Masons show lodge, antique cars

The Marion Masons held a public tour of the Pythagorean Lodge and a car show on Sunday afternoon.

Tour goers were able to get a glimpse at the posters with the three degrees that Masonry candidates go through before becoming a "Master," or a full-time member. The three degrees are entered apprentice, fellowcrafts and master mason.

People who participated in the tour were also able to see the "G" mounted above the Master's chair.

According to Mason Tom Dexter, the letter stands for two things: Geometry and God.

This reflects the one requirement of candidates for the Masons, "they must believe in a supreme being," Dexter said.

However, Dexter and other members Mark Sperre and Dino Valenti stressed that the Masons are not a religious organization, they're a charitable one.

"The Masons worldwide contribute between $2 million and $3 million a day to charitable organizations," Dexter said.

Ultimately, the Masons hope that giving the public a glimpse into their lodge will encourage other men to want to join, as well as maybe even dispelling some of the myths of the storied fraternity.

"We're not a secret organization," Valenti said. "We just have secrets. Like any family has secrets."
