Mattapoisett Area Artists showcase at Helping Hands Society
Although they don’t have a gallery of their own yet, the Mattapoisett Area Artists show at the Tinkhamtown Helping Hands Society is giving them an opportunity to exhibit their varied work for the public.
The group has met monthly for three years and was originally founded by David Englund, Becky McCann, and Christine Bertram.
Bertram, a painter and graphic designer, said the group offers artists an opportunity to talk about their work and get feedback.
“We just wanted to have something where we could meet once a month and invite other artists around town to join,” she said.
For their current show, which opened on Saturday, Sept. 21, members of the group submitted paintings, photographs, sculptures, and other work. The variety of styles includes everything from local landscapes to paintings inspired by Hinduism.
“Some artists haven’t gone to school or anything, and they have wonderful artwork,” said McCann.
Although the show is a few miles from the center of town, the artists were pleased with the turnout on the opening weekend.
“At first I thought we’re going out in the country and nobody will come out and see us. But there is quite a bit of traffic on that country road," said Englund. "It’s been a good response, both in terms of people just looking and some buying.”
The artists would like to get more people, of all levels and mediums, to join them. Currently there are around 25 members and membership is free. Bertram said they are working to get the group certified as a nonprofit and would eventually like to have a gallery of their own in town.
“It just started out slow, but we’d like to get that going so we can apply for grants,” Bertram said.
The Mattapoisett Area Artists next meeting is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the Mattapoisett Chowder House on Route 6 near River Road. Contact ramcann@aol.com for more information.
The Tinkham show, located at 188 Acushnet Road, is open Sept. 28 and 29, from noon to 6 p.m.
