Mattapoisett Fire Department gets 2,000 batteries, gives them away

When the smoke detector’s battery starts to die, there are two ways to make that annoying, intermittent, high-pitched beeping stop.

Option one, also known as the dangerous solution, is to remove the battery until you remember to replace it or until your house burns down.

Option two, the safe solution, is to give the Mattapoisett Fire Department a call.

Fire Chief Andrew Murray and his team have 2,000 batteries and they’ll install them, free of charge.

“I bought a package of Duracell batteries and there was a note on it that said every tenth battery was donated to a fire department,” said Murray.

Murray looked up the program called “Power Those Who Protect Us,” which has donated 18 million Duracell batteries to more than 11,000 volunteer fire departments nationwide.

Murray gave the company a call.

“Two days later, I got an overnight package with 2,000 batteries from Duracell,” said the Chief.

The station received 9-volt, D and AA batteries, and began offering free battery replacement for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Murray said the department has already used approximately 200 of the batteries.

“Call the station, set up an appointment, and we’ll come out,” said Murray.
