Mattapoisett Land Trust looks to increase traffic to property
The Mattapoisett Land Trust is looking to make its largest property more accessible, just in time for summer hikers.
The Old Aucoot Preserve, which covers more than 300 acres between Prospect Road and Aucoot Road, includes a vernal pool and miles of walking trails.
More trails are planned on the property, said Paul Osenkowski, a director of the land trust, including one that will go from Prospect Road to a blueberry patch.
But getting to the trails is an issue. Currently, the only parking available is on Bowman Road off of Aucoot Road.
“We want to have something on the north side, the south side, the east side, and the west side,” said Osenkowski.
The Trust plans to create a small lot on Prospect Road, the street closest to the blueberries.
“We want a parking spot that is not too obtrusive to the residents,” said Osenkowski.
Ideally, said Osenkowski, the lot would hold four or five places; however, the Selectmen are asking for 12 spaces.
“The Selectmen want to make sure that they do the best for the people of Mattapoisett, but we have to consider the people that live in the area,” said Osenkowski.
Besides making the lot unobtrusive for Prospect Road residents, Osenkowski wants to make sure the lot doesn’t invite any seedy activity.
“I want to make it accessible from the street, so when the cops go by they can shine their lights in there. I won’t go into the nefarious things that can go on in a parking space,” he joked.
A few trees will have to come down to create the lot as well as the new trail. The latter will be an Eagle Scout project for a local Boy Scout.
Ultimately, Osenkowski wants the lot to give people a reason to step away from their screens and take a walk.
“We’re trying to stimulate interest for residents to get out,” said Osenkowski.
