Mattapoisett Library falls into autumn with events and activities
MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Free Public Library will hold a number of fall activities this October. All events are free to attend, and are held at 7 Barstow St.
Sisters in crime. Meet a trio of mystery authors at the Sisters in Crime Mystery-Making event on Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. Edith Maxwell, Kit Irwin, and Sharon-Healy Yang will brainstorm on their feet to create a brand new mystery. Attendees will contribute to this fun, fast paced improv game to create the story. Registration is optional.
Spooky film. Get in the spooky spirit with “The Cat and the Canary," a Gothic silent film. The library will host a screening Oct. 13 at 6 p.m., with a live music accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis. Registration is optional, but priority will be given to those who have registered.
Book clubs. There are many book clubs to choose from. The Fantasy Book Club meets Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. to discuss "What Moves the Dead" by T. Kingfisher. The Fiction Book Club meets on Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. to discuss "Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books" by Kirsten Miller. The Nonfiction Book Club meets Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. to discuss "We the People: a history of the U.S. Constitution" by Jill Lepore. Copies of all books are available at the library for checkout, and new members are welcome.
Pumpkin painting. During an adult craft workshop Oct. 17 at 1 p.m., paint a miniature pumpkin to take home. Get creative and create a piece of decor for home or to give as a gift to someone else. Registration is required.
Author talk. Come to an author talk with Katie Bernet on Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. Bernet is the New York Times and international bestselling author of “Beth Is Dead,” which was the inaugural selection for Reese Witherspoon’s Sunnie Reads Book Club and has been translated into more than a dozen languages. Copies available at the library for checkout. Registration optional.
Banned book trivia. Celebrate Banned Books Week with banned book trivia Oct. 9 at noon. After an early release from school, teens 12 and up are welcome to join a trivia game to win prizes and see who knows the most about banned books. No registration required.
Fire prevention month. Fire Captain Andy Murray will read a book at the library for Fire Prevention Month. He will read about fire equipment and construction vehicles during the Oct. 6 storytime at 3:30 p.m.
Pet ghost. Celebrate spooky season Wednesday, Oct. 7 by creating a pet ghost in a jar. All materials will be provided for the 4 p.m. class, and is suited for kids aged 6 and up. Registration is required.
Woven wall hanging. On Thursday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m., join the library to create a colorful wall hanging using yarn and a cardboard loom. The class is best for kids aged 6 and older. All materials will be provided. Registration is required.
Halloween party. The library will throw a Halloween party Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m. Storyteller Rona Leventhal will share a story, and kids can take part in some spooky crafts and check out everyone's costume. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Mattapoisett Local Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
