Mattapoisett looks to high-tech crosswalks
What could be more exciting (or safer) than light-up crosswalks?
It could happen in Mattapoisett.
Town Administrator Mike Gagne said the crosswalks on Route 6 at Pearl and Barstow Streets are dangerous areas due to the lack of being painted and low visibility. Glare issues from traffic were also a problem.
“I’ve observed a lot of distraction in that section with the multiple lanes and a lot of entering and exiting from local businesses,” he said. “I’m concerned over who might be in those crosswalks.”
Gagne proposed to the Selectmen Tuesday night to obtain grant money from the state Transportation Improvement Plan to not only get the crosswalks painted with green reflective paint, but to also implement a lighting system along the way.
Referencing crosswalks at UMass Dartmouth and UMass Amherst, Gagne said light strips and sensors are placed across roads that turn on as pedestrians approach the crosswalks.
“As soon as you enter that sensor zone, cars will know someone is there,” he said.
After the Selectmen gave the nod to proceed, Gagne said he would talk with the state department of transportation in going forward with the work.
Selectman Jordan Collyer, however, had his reserves about working with the department.
“We’ve brought up the issue of getting lights up [along Route 6 at Old Hammondtown school] and having those crosswalks painted before,” he said. “The department has been less than cooperative on those requests. It’s foolish that we’ve gone this long without any additional lighting or signage.”
