Mattapoisett Mother’s Day 5K a huge hit

MATTAPOISETT — Water Street was lined with runners of all ages on the morning of Sunday, May 12 for the “Run Like a Mother 5K.”

The run started and finished at Shipyard Park, while participants ran a loop around Ned’s Point Lighthouse and returned.

All proceeds from the event will support local mothers battling postpartum depression.

Mattapoisett resident Jen Pease often can be seen running around town with a number of her friends. Pease said that she and friends came up with the event as a way to celebrate women in the area and bring the community together.

Pease, along with many other mothers who participated in the race, ran alongside one of her children for the entirety of the 3.1 mile route, and was joined by her other three kids to cross the finish line.

“It was an experience that I won’t forget,” said Pease.

The top three finishers in each age group, including a stroller division, took home awards.

“We had more runners [participate] than we could have ever expected, especially in the first year,” said Pease. “We hope to make it an annual event in town.”

Runners were treated to water and bananas in Shipyard Park following the race.
