Mattapoisett officials talk storm clean up, offer safety tips
Since the winter storm hit the region on Friday, Mattapoisett officials have been busy - to say the least.
Many trees and power lines were knocked down leaving 99 percent of NSTAR's Mattapoisett customers without power for two days and officials scrambling to clear the snow and debris.
"There were a lot of power lines down. There were trees down over wires. Nothing too major though," said Mattapoisett Fire Deputy Chief Walter Morgado.
The Fire Department called in additional staff over the weekend to assist residents during the storm.
After working all weekend, Morgado said the Fire Department has addressed nearly all of the downed power lines as of Monday.
Firefighters also responded to numerous calls for medical assistance, primarily for senior citizens in town. However, Morgado said there have been no injuries reported.
On Sunday, Morgado and his crew responded to a house fire on Crystal Spring Road. It took nine hours for the firefighters to extinguish the flames. No one was hurt, but the house is a "total loss," he said. For more on the fire, click here.
By Monday, Morgado said things seemed to be quieting down. Only two percent of NSTAR's Mattapoisett customers were without power by Monday night, which is a far cry from the 99 percent that lost power on Friday.
"We're down to a skeleton crew now, but we're still getting five to 10 calls a day from residents. Just minor stuff," Morgado said.
Morgado advised residents to double-check their carbon monoxide and smoke detectors to ensure everything is in working order.
Additionally, Mattapoisett Building Inspector Andy Bobola has advised residents to keep power and exhaust vents clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide from entering their homes.
