Mattapoisett schools see 5.9 percent increase in budget
With a 5.9 percent increase over last year's budget, the Mattapoisett School Committee approved a budget of almost $6.1 million on Monday.
Staffing obligations and special education costs drove the majority of the $339,452 budget increase for Center School and Old Hammondtown School.
A 5.42 percent or $171,488 increase at the staff level was a result of changes for teachers, retirement, and contractual obligations. Special education and out of district costs rose by 20.41 percent or $177,276, including a significant rise in transportation costs.
“When we’re setting the budget, not only are we providing support for the Center School and the Old Hammondtown students, but we also have to provide for any student who lives in Mattapoisett who needs services outside of the district. That includes vocational and agricultural schools,” said Superintendent Doug White.
The Mattapoisett School District did see minor decreases in some areas. Old Hammondtown saw a decrease $1,800 in gas and electricity while Center School saw a $3,000 reduction in heat and electricity.
While Principals Rose Bowman of Center School and Matt D’Andrea of Old Hammondtown said there were a few shifts in positions since two teachers will be taking a leave of absence, there will be no staffing cuts.
"Isn't it great? We're so happy," said Bowman.
