Mattapoisett seeks new owner for old fire station

MATTAPOISETT – The Town of Mattapoisett is seeking proposals for the purchase of the former Mattapoisett Fire Station at 26 County Road, Mattapoisett.

In an email, the Town states that this property is “strategically located along the Route 6 corridor in the popular commercial area” and being sold in order to “promote its preservation and redevelopment so it may continue to contribute to the Town.”

The Select Board has the ability to accept or decline any proposal, stated Town Administrator Mike Lorenco at the July 25 Select Board meeting when the fate of the old fire station was first on the Select Board’s agenda.

The board will decide what to accept based on what comes in, provided it follows the town’s existing bylaws.

Town counsel Matt Thomas said that because of the way the building sits “kitty corner” on the property, he does not think the new owners could do much if they knocked the building down – in fact, it would add more restrictions.

“There’s zoning bylaws and setbacks based on frontage to the roadway,” said Lorenco. “The building that’s there is grandfathered in because it was built before those bylaws were set. If someone were to tear the building down, building something similar wouldn’t pass current bylaws.”

The Request for Proposal can be requested by emailing kdesrosiers@mattapoisett.net. All responses are due in physical copy at Town Hall by Dec. 2 at 11:00 a.m.
