MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Select Board made a statement on the arrest of Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons who was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop on Saturday, July 17.

Lyons has since been placed on administrative leave with pay.

“This is a very unfortunate matter that the Town is taking seriously and will be moving forward with our own investigation immediately,” the statement read. “Once information can be obtained, we will take appropriate action on behalf of the Town.”

The Select Board went on to request patience, support and understanding from the public on the matter.

The statement also reassured the town at large that the board still has “every bit of faith that the integrity of the Town’s Police Department will be maintained, and they will continue to serve the public as they always have” under the interim leadership of Captain Jason King.
