Mattapoisett voters head to town election this Tuesday
MATTAPOISETT — Unlike after most annual town elections, some newly elected Select Board members in Mattapoisett won’t begin a three-year term.
voters will be asked to select up to three of the six candidates. how long their terms will be will depend on their ranking in the final tally.
One candidate chosen by voters on Tuesday, May 19 will fill the full-length term vacated by former member Tyler Macallister, while two others will fill a two- and one-year term respectively.
The candidate with the most votes will serve for three years, with the next most popular candidates serving two- and one-year terms, respectively.
With two new seats added to the board after Town Meeting approved a citizen’s petition last year to expand the board, the staggered term lengths are meant to smoothly incorporate new members.
Mattapoisett Town Clerk Catherine Heuberger said the only difference on this year’s ballots will be the number of circles they can fill in to choose candidates.
“They can fill out zero of them, one of them, or two of them, or three. They can vote for up to three candidates,” she said.
This year’s competitors for the three Select Board seats are Eric Beauregard, Frances-Feliz Kearns, James Harlfinger, Judy Mooney, Ned Kaiser and Nicole Doyon Lynch.
One seat on the Board of Health and two on the Library Board of Trustees are also contested.
Kathy Eklund and Michael King are running to fill a one-year vacancy on the Board of Health after former member Alexandria Nicolosi moved away.
Incumbent William Coquilette is running for re-election on the Library Board of Trustees, with Curtis Mendes and Jan Brodie also in the running.
Unchallenged incumbents include Heuberger for town clerk, Raymond Andrews for the Board of Assessors, Margaret Daisy Pullo Breese for Mattapoisett School Committee, Kearns for Old Rochester Regional School Committee.
Lizanne Capper Campbell is running again for moderator, Daniel William Chase for water and sewer commissioner, Carmelo Nicolosi for the Board of Health, Karen Field for the Planning Board and Leda Kim for the Housing Authority.
James Andrew Pierson and Susan Wilbur are both rerunning for their seats on the Community Preservation Committee.
Voting will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Old Hammondtown School.
