New car dealership, auto repair proposed for Route 6
A used car dealership and auto repair shop may open at 79 Marion Rd, the spot formerly occupied by Jay's Auto.
David and Kevin Ducharme met with Selectmen on Tuesday night for an auto sales license.
The Ducharmes already own a small dealership in New Bedford. Kevin Ducharme said he would like to store 25 cars on the property, although he had originally wanted to keep 35. He said he took into account the fact that the shop is situated on a high-speed road near a hill that creates a blind spot.
Before making a decision, Selectman Tyler Macallister said he wanted to make sure the parking area wasn’t so full that cars would be hindered from entering the business, which could cause a dangerous traffic situation.
“You don’t want to have somebody stop on Route 6, especially there. That’s a blind, fast area,” he said.
Macallister said the business may need to be limited to 25 cars total – including those for sale and those under repair.
“We don’t want to get a phone call that people are parking or walking to the business from next door,” he said. “If twenty-five can fit and you can work on seven more, beautiful. It becomes an issue if we start to hear issues from abutters.”
The previous auto business in that location had a permit for 12 cars.
Before making a decision, Selectmen said the Ducharmes need to discuss their plan with the police security officer.
David Ducharme assured Selectmen that they wanted to be “good neighbors.”
Kevin Ducharme also said he wouldn’t put large banners or signs on the road.
“I’m not one for big banners. I don’t want any obstructions in the road,” he said.
Selectmen voted to continue the hearing until their next meeting.
