Old Rochester Little League teams see back-to-back victories


The Old Rochester Little League teams captured several wins over the last week.
Below are some of the highlights:
Age nine and under
The age nine and under team won the title for its age group at the Fairhaven/Acushnet Little League 2012 Michael Poulin/Matt Oliveira Memorial Tournament on Sunday, July 22 at Pope Park in Acushnet.
Old Rochester defeated West Taunton, 4-3, to capture the tournament.
Old Rochester opened the tournament by defeating the host, Fairhaven/Acushnet, 15-9, on Friday, July 20 on Knox Field in Acushnet. In its second game, Old Rochester defeated West Taunton, 16-11, on Knox Field on July 21. In the championship game, Old Rochester faced West Taunton again, and earned a dramatic walk-off win on Jason Field when Alex Wright singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wright earned the game’s No. 1 star for his heroics.
Old Rochester’s Wayne Andrews was named Tournament MVP. Andrews pitched three innings in each of the team’s victories. He also added four singles, a double and a home run in the tournament. In addition to Andrews’ strong performance, Ryan Quinlan started and pitched in all three games for Old Rochester. Steven Carvalho Jr. caught all 18 innings for Old Rochester and also contributed at the plate with six hits in the tournament.
Old Rochester Little League recently concluded its second season since merging in 2011. More than 250 kids from Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester participated this season.
Age eight and under
The age eight and under team were crowned Champions of the “Little Fenway” tournament hosted by Freetown Youth Athletic Association on July 12 to 15. The team went 6-0 over the weekend in a field of 16 area teams, beating Sandwich 14-4 in the finals.
“We would like to thank Freetown for hosting a great tournament.” said Manager Jesse Hartley-Matteson. “Our kids faced strong competition and we are extremely proud of them. They improved in every game.”
The team also finished as the runner-up in the Fairhaven/Acushnet Little League tournament held July 19 to 22 in Fairhaven. O.R.L.L. went 4-2, losing the Championship game to Whaling City.
Age 10
The team for 10-year-olds advanced to the District 7 Championship where they lost to Lakeville, who went on to win the Massachusetts 10 year old state championship. The ORLL 10 year old team defeated Barnstable (twice), Wareham and Middleboro to advance to the championship game.
The team advanced to the championship game of the Pembroke tournament and the semifinals of the Sandwich tournament defeating Milton, Walpole, Pembroke and Middleboro among others. The team ended their summer with victories against Whaling City (New Bedford) and District 6 champions Swansea in the Fairhaven-Acushnet tournament.
The team finished the summer with a record of 14 wins and 6 losses.
The team was comprised of Nick Johnson, Johnny Farrell, Jack Lebrun, Ted Dunn, Chris Labelle, Noah Maxwell, Michael Barry, Jon Hamilton, Adam Mendes, Nathan Kvilhaug, Connor Hayes and Drew Hiller, and coached by Jared Maxwell, Tom Barry, Peter Lebrun and Lee Hamilton.
Age 11 and under
The age 11 and under All Star Team finished second in the 2012 Fairhaven/Acushnet Little League 11 and under tournament this season.
