Old Rochester students set to attend Boys and Girls State
MATTAPOISETT - Eight students at Old Rochester Regional High School are slated to attend the Massachusetts Boys and Girls State conventions at Stonehill College in June.
At the convention, students attending Boys and Girls State study state and local government, establishing and operating a mock government. Students form two political parties, hold conventions, conduct campaigns, nominate and vote on candidates to learn the Massachusetts political process.
Four Old Rochester students received sponsorships to attend Boys State. Lucas Hadley is sponsored by the Mattapoisett Lions Club. Grady Oliviera is sponsored by the Boston
Foundation and Lawrence DiCara, Esquire in memory of George White. The foundation is also sponsoring Luke Pierre in memory of Jack DeCosta. The Machacam Club is sponsoring James Russell to attend the program.
Four students from Old Rochester received sponsorships to attend Girls State. The American Legion Florence Eastman Post 280, which is based in Mattapoisett, is sponsoring Sage
Elia. Addison Roy is sponsored by the Mattapoisett Lions Club. The Boston Foundation and
Lawrence DiCara are also sponsoring Olivia Thompson in memory of Jack DeCosta. The Mattapoisett Woman’s Club is sponsoring Angela Palmer.
Eligible students for Boys and Girls State are juniors in high school, have high academic achievement and demonstrate leadership ability with an interest in the democratic process, according to a press release from Old Rochester principal Michael Devoll and assistant principal Lauren Millette.
