MATTAPOISETT — The Old Rochester Regional High School track is open and a grand reopening event will be scheduled for August, according to Old Rochester Regional School District Superintendent Mike Nelson.

Track resurfacing work began on Monday, April 3 and was expected to be finished on Monday, June 19. However, work was completed on Friday, June 2 and the track has since reopened to the community.

"We are extremely excited about the completion of the track resurfacing project. Compared to the previous black track surface, the new red surfacing really pops and matches our school's color scheme," said Nelson. "The completion of the project is a significant accomplishment that directly benefits our student-athletes and our track and field teams.”

The Old Rochester Regional High School track was closed during the spring season to students and community members while the work was ongoing. Track and field teams practiced at neighboring school districts’ facilities.

"We are grateful to the neighboring districts who allowed our student-athletes to use their track facilities during the spring season," said Old Rochester Regional High School Principal Mike Devoll. "We are proud to be able to provide this revitalized space for our athletic teams and community."

The previous track surface was beyond its life expectancy and was beginning to show deterioration, according to a press release from the school district.

"The new track surface provides safer and more modern conditions for all who use it, and our students and community members will be able to enjoy it for years to come," Facilities Director Gene Jones said. "We greatly appreciate the efficient and high-quality work by Cape and Islands Tennis & Track.”

The exact date of the grand reopening will be released at a later date, according to a press release from the school district.
