Homecoming heartbreak: third football loss for Old Colony
ROCHESTER — The Old Colony Cougars lost 36-14 to Blue Hills Regional Technical School on Friday, Oct. 10 at their homecoming football game.
Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School takes on Blue Hills each year as an annual homecoming tradition.
The Blue Hills scored the first touchdown of the game — with Old Colony quickly scoring after. From there, Old Colony could not keep up.
Aidan Anderson, a junior and varsity captain who studies Automotive, said the team “Came out with energy” because of senior night. However, “after a few mistakes, they just kept adding up.”
Head coach Brandon Mendez is proud of his team’s effort. He stated, “I think we came out tough and we played well early.”
“We stacked a few negative plays together and [the Blue Hills] took advantage of it, like a good football team does,” said Mendez.
Old Colony stayed tough, fighting through the mistakes. “We fought. We fought through the entire game, proud of the fight. They just got the best of us today,” Mendez said.
Mendez and Anderson look to improve their game for the rest of the season.
“I think we have to eliminate mistakes.” Mendez continued. “We don't have a toughness issue. We have to figure out how to execute an entire game instead of just the majority of the game.”
Anderson looks to lead his team with energy, hoping they can stay consistent with high energy all of the game.
“Even though there's a mistake, you got to build on top of it, don't make a negative into another negative, you got to make it into a positive,” said Anderson.
Old Colony’s record is now 2-3 with a few regular season games, the state playoffs and vocational playoff season coming up. Mendez plans to play every game “as a playoff game from here on out.”
“All’s not lost.” Mendez continued, “We play with pride and just try to keep improving every day.”
Old Colony’s next game is Friday Oct. 17 at home against Diman Regional Vocation Technical High School at 7 p.m.
