One hospitalized after car crashes into pizza restaurant sign
MATTAPOISETT — One person was hospitalized Monday, Oct. 7 after a collision between two vehicles caused one of the cars to crash into the signage of a Route 6 restaurant.
Shortly before 4 p.m., Mattapoisett police and firefighters responded to the collision, in which a sedan struck the base of a raised marquee sign in front of Nick’s Homemade Pizza.
One person was transported to the hospital, according to Mattapoisett Police Chief Jason King.
There was significant damage to the front of the sedan and the sign. Two people appeared to have been inside the car, though it was unclear which of the driver or passenger was hospitalized.
The other involved vehicle, an SUV, was parked after the collision on an adjacent road. There was visible damage on the car’s front left bumper. The driver of the vehicle appeared unharmed.
It was unclear what caused the crash or how the collision between the two vehicles sent the sedan into the signboard in front of the restaurant.
After the sedan was separated by tow truck from the Nick’s Homemade Pizza signage, Mattapoisett firefighters used long hooks to dismantle the loose, hanging pieces of the tall letterboard.
“We don’t want to be getting hurt by falling debris later, so we ended up just taking it down to mitigate that hazard,” Mattapoisett Fire Chief Andrew Murray said.
The crash is still under investigation by the Mattapoisett Police Department, King said.
