On Halloween, Friday, Oct. 31, kids and residents of all ages dressed up to take part in the annual Mattapoisett Police Department Halloween costume parade and contest.
Participants began their march outside of Center School on Church Street, paraded through town, then ended up at Shipyard Park for dancing, candy and a costume contest judged by the police.
Over 600 bags of candy were ready for creatures of the night while costume contest entries strutted their stuff.
Nina Lyman dressed as Princess Tiana and Ivy Stewart dressed as a half angel-hal devil were excited to be a part of the parade and get up to some Halloween mischief.
“I'm excited for all the candy and Milky Ways,” said Stewart.
Lyman quickly added, “And candy! And trick-or-treating!”
Both planned on entering the costume contest. Stewart was confident she could win, but Lyman dished up some honesty saying “No!” eagerly.
Lyman and Stewart left with some sage advice. Lyman said, “If you're any boy out there, I'm coming to get you” and Stewart stated, “Stay kind!”
Lt. Scott LeBlanc explained that this costume parade and contest has been a tradition as long as he can remember — even winning the contest twice when he was a kid.
He has been involved with the parade and the police for over 25 years saying it's a team effort bringing the magic together.
“It's really not hard [to organize]. Everybody works as a team and we take donations from all the businesses,” LeBlanc said.
Candy and prizes were donated to make the day special, something LeBlanc was very grateful for.
“This couldn't happen without all the donations that people make to us and the association and we have had a lot of gifts,” he said.
Lauren Perry, a resident and mother, was dressed as Cleopatra and joined her son, Noah, in trick-or-treating and the costume contest. Perry said she loves coming every single year.
“Everybody does such a creative job here. It's such a wonderful thing and the police are so wonderful hosting this. It's been such a wonderful experience,” she said.
Perry said the event brings everyone together and makes them feel safe knowing the police invited everyone to join in the fun.
“I think that with [the police] hosting it, it says, ‘Hey, we are over watching you. We are protecting you, and we're here to have a good time with you.’ So it just bonds, lets everybody come together.”
Perry concluded that they are locals and “love being here and love supporting the town.”
