Opening Day is home run for little league

Main Street was closed to traffic briefly on Saturday morning, but it was far from empty. Old Rochester Little League players celebrated Opening Day with a parade that began at Island Wharf, ran down Main Street and finished at the Town House ball field.
Last year marked the first season that brought Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester Little League players together in the same league. Previously, each town had its own league. Mattapoisett and Marion formed a league together a few years ago. In 2013, Rochester Youth Baseball merged with the Old Rochester Little League.
The league’s 328 players stood in uniform around the diamond for the ceremony after the parade. The Sippican Elementary School March Band played “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Also surrounding the field were police and fire officials who provided an escort for players during the parade.
Little League President Derek Mello said the young league would not have been possible without former league President Peter Johnson. Mello also thanked the parents.
“The volunteers that help us out is what makes all of this happen,” Mello said.
This year, the league has five divisions and more than 20 teams.
Marion Recreation Director Jody Dickerson contrasted the mild, sunny day with the previous months of snow and ice in his remarks.
“It’s been a long, long winter, but spring is finally here,” he said. “Let’s play ball!”
