ORR sees population uptick

Old Rochester Regional High School's unexpected population boom this year says a lot for the institution’s reputation, but it’s also caused last minute scrambling for administration.

“We are healthy just north of 700 students. My joke now is we are morbidly obese,” said Principal Mike Devoll.

He had anticipated 745 students for the school year, but as of Wednesday, 785 were enrolled. Devoll said 40 students left the district, but 60 students transferred into the high school. Additionally 195 freshmen were estimated to move up from the eighth grade, but 213 actually came to the school.

“Space-wise we can handle it,” said Devoll.

Some class sizes, however, are too large. In particular, Spanish I has 67 students in two sections. Some classes are also short on textbooks.

To solve the problem, Devoll and Superintendent Doug White suggested adding a part-time Spanish teacher as well as purchasing additional textbooks by moving around funds in the budget.

Business Administrator Patrick Spencer said the budget could handle those changes.

School Committee member James Muse affirmed the need to keep class sizes small and said if funds exceeding the budget were needed, he would be amenable to asking the towns for more money.

“If we have to go back to the towns, we have to go back to the towns,” he said. “Our job is not to say it’s OK.”

Muse welcomed the administration to alert the School Committee of further needs.
