ORR to show education documentary 'The Race to Nowhere'

Sep 8, 2014

Old Rochester Regional Junior High will host a showing of “The Race to Nowhere” on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the high school auditorium.

The film is a documentary the US educational system and the pressure put on students and families. It has received accolades as a top film on education and features the stories of students across the country who have been pushed to the brink by over-scheduling, over-testing and the pressure to achieve.

Junior High Principal Kevin Brogioli said, “We are looking to begin a dialogue in our community as we attempt to find a healthy balance. All proceeds will go to our student activities account and needy families fund.”

Through the testimony of educators, parents and  education experts, it reveals an education system in which cheating has become commonplace; students have become disengaged; stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant; and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

The film has been shown in more than 6,000 schools, universities, cinemas, hospitals, corporations and community centers and has inspired a grassroots movement for education transformation.

Tickets are $10 online (www.racetonowhere.com) and $15 at the door.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film begins at 7 p.m. The film will be followed by a
panel discussion for those who are interested.
