Police: 22-year-old charged with OUI after rolling SUV, driving with flat tires
A 22-year-old Princeton man is facing drunk driving charges after police say he hit a sign on Mattapoisett Road in Rochester at approximately 12:15 a.m. on Friday, rolled his SUV, and continued driving the vehicle into Mattapoisett with all of the airbags deployed and two flat tires.
Jack P. Lilburn of Gregory Hill Road in Princeton told police he had been at a New Bedford bar and was trying to return to UMass Dartmouth when the accident occurred.
Police said Lilburn lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center line, went off the left side of Mattapoisett Road, veered back onto the road, struck a speed limit sign, and rolled the SUV.
The SUV landed on its wheels, at which point Lilburn got out of the car and retrieved the front bumper, which had detached in the crash, and placed it in the back seat. He then headed into Mattapoisett via North Street, according to police.
Rochester and Mattapoisett police searched for the vehicle and, following the road damage caused by the flat tires, found Lilburn and the badly damaged SUV 1.2 miles away at the end of Summer Street in Mattapoisett, where he was arrested.
Police said Lilburn did not remember how the crash happened.
In addition to the charge of operating under the influence, Mattapoisett Police charged Lilburn with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stay in marked lanes, and malicious destruction of property in excess of $250 for the damage caused to the road.
Rochester Police are seeking additional charges against Lilburn for leaving the scene of an accident and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
Lilburn was arraigned and released on Friday. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 21 at Wareham District Court.
