Power restored throughout much of Rochester

Aug 29, 2011

Rochester emerged from Tropical Storm Irene with significant damage from downed trees and power-lines, but power had been restored throughout much of town by Monday.

High Street experienced the brunt of damage but several roads had debris scatter about them and emergency crews worked through the night to reestablish power, halting work around 2 a.m. and resuming around 6a.m. this morning.

"We fared well but still have extensive damage," said Rochester Police Chief Paul Magee adding that emergency services received no reports of storm-related injuries and that there was no widespread property damage.

Many residents had generators and were ready for the storm.

"I've lived here since '77," said Town Clerk and Selectman Naida Parker. "When you live here you know you need to have a generator for these possibilities."

The plaza at Plumb Corner also suffered minor cosmetic damage but had power by 10 p.m. Sunday night.

Road crews were still out in force Monday clearing fallen branches from the road and reestablishing power throughout the rest of town.

Chief Magee said that residents should not touch any downed wires as they could be hazardous and asked that motorists please not drive around or through barricades on roads.

Any resident without power is asked to call NSTAR directly at 1-800-592-2000. Authorities are not able to call NSTAR on behalf of a consumer.
