Rochester principal search underway

Twenty-five people have applied for the vacancy left by outgoing Rochester Memorial School Principal Dr. Moira Rodgers.

Rodgers announced her resignation to parents on May 21, effective at the end of June. Applicants had until June 6 to apply.

The School Committee established a screening committee consisting of one teacher, one paraprofessional, two school committee members, a central office representative, one community member, and one principal.

The committee meets June 13 to assess the candidates. On June 17, the committee will nominate qualified applicants for interviews that are tentatively scheduled for June 25, 26, and 27.

Two or three individuals will be chosen for another round of assessments in front of Old Rochester Regional School District Superintendent Doug White and the School Committee.

White said parents and staff would have the opportunity to meet and the finalists before a decision is made.

“We will get feedback from them as well, and after that we will make a decision on who the next principal will be,” White said.

Committee members Tina Rood and Robin Rounseville volunteered for the screening committee.

At the School Committee’s June 6 meeting Rodgers said she was grateful for the opportunity to serve as principal.

“Parents and the community have been so profoundly supportive, and of course the staff. Words could not express my gratitude,” Rodgers said.

She resigned one year after she became the school’s principal to take a position at an educational collaborative near Boston. Rodgers said a former employer had recruited her and she hadn’t sought the position.

Rodgers said her brief tenure improved the school.

“I do feel like we made some plans and paved the way for changes at [Rochester Memorial School] that, over the long term, will be best for the students and staff,” she said.

Before she leaves, Rodgers said she would do what is necessary to help administrators and staff.

“I feel confident the transition will be successful,” she said.
