Rochester Selectmen require muzzle for local dog

The Rochester Board of Selectmen ordered  that Daisy, a mixed breed dog that killed a Chihuahua in March, be muzzled even when on a leash.

Liam DeLowery, of Bowen’s Lane, petitioned the Selectmen asking that the Giffords’ dog, Daisy, a mix of Labrador Retriever and Poodle, be muzzled after she attacked and killed his Chihuahua on March 24.

During the June 4 meeting of the Selectmen, DeLowery said the incident occurred when Margaret Gifford was walking Daisy on Bowen’s Lane. He said his dog was on his family’s fenced-in property when the attack happened.

Gifford refuted the claims. She said that DeLowery’s dog had run into the street, prompting her to drop her leash, and Daisy to attack.

“Daisy is always leashed,” Gifford said. “The dog was attacked on the street and ran back to the DeLowery property. Their dog ran at me from behind and surprised me. I dropped the leash.”

DeLowery said that he was concerned for the safety of the other animals in the neighborhood.

“It happened so easily that it could happen again,” he said. “I’m not asking that the dog be euthanized. All I’m asking is that she be muzzled so it can never happen again.”

Arnie Johnson, also a resident of Bowen’s Lane, supported DeLowery’s claims.

“Margaret Gifford has told both me and my wife on various occasions that her dog does not like other dogs,” Johnson said.

Paul Stubbs, of Mendell Road, supported the Giffords. “I see Daisy play with their cats all the time, and I’ve never seen her hurt them,” he said.

Selectmen Chair Richard Nunes said that a muzzle might be the “safest option.”

“Daisy is not running in the street attacking people, but another little dog could come running out and this could happen again,” Nunes said. “I think this is the easiest and the safest thing to do.”
