Rochester teen to take on motocross champions in Bulgaria
Fourteen-year-old Jake Pinhancos received his first bike when he was three.
Ever since, he has harbored a passion for motocross - a form of motorcycle racing held on enclosed, off-road trails - which has taken the local teen across the globe.
Pinhancos received two gold medals in 2010 at the World Class Championship in France. Next week, Pinhancos will travel overseas to represent the U.S. in the Junior World Class Championship in Sevlievo, Bulgaria.
“I’m a little nervous going over there. It’s going to be tough racing against the fastest and best riders,” he said.
One of the biggest factors to consider before he leaves for Bulgaria is the time zone. Pinhancos said he is trying to get himself prepared for the seven-hour time difference between the two countries.
“My sleep schedule might get a little messed up, but other than that, my training schedule has stayed fairly the same,” he said.
Training is a daily chore for Pinhancos. His day consists of morning workouts and afternoon rides at local tracks.
With the support of his family, Pinhancos said he was allowed to be home-schooled so he could keep up with his training regimen and participate in national and international competitions.
“My mom, dad and sister definitely support me,” he said. “They gave up a big part of their lives so I could do what I love to do. I travel most of the year so home-school definitely works out better for me.”
After Bulgaria, Pinhancos will travel to Florida with his father for more training. At 14, he is at a crucial stage in his career as the best riders go professional at ages 16 to 18.
Whatever the outcome of the competitions, Pinhancos says he is grateful to participate and even more so for his strong network of supporters.
“I’m always a bit nervous before a race, but once it starts, I’m fine because I know I’m going to have fun,” he said.
