Selectmen consider BYOB concerts in Marion Music Hall

Nov 20, 2013

A soon to retire Mattapoisett police officer asked Selectmen to allow the Marion Music Hall to host concerts where attendees can bring their own alcohol.

Mitchell Suzan, a 30 year veteran of the police force, appeared at the board’s Nov. 19 meeting to discuss the proposal.

Suzan, along with Rochester resident Steve Johnson, have owned and operated Stitch Productions for about seven years. The Mattapoisett-based company has hosted dances and concerts for teenagers and children in Fairhaven, Marion, Fall River and other South Coast locations.

Suzan said those successful dances led him to consider hosting adult concerts. His BYOB (bring your own bottle) request for concerts include having the hall open from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekends where patrons could enjoy the music and bring their own drinks. Concerts would feature jazz, blues, folk and rock bands. “We want to provide a place where a couple can go,” Suzan said, adding his company would sell tickets for those concerts. No alcohol would be served or sold at the concerts.

Selectmen said they would have to consult with town counsel before making a decision.

“The concept I can agree with,” said Selectman Stephen Cushing. “I’m nervous to be honest with you.”

Chair Jody Dickerson agreed: “I’d like to see town counsel take a look at this.” Dickerson said the Music Hall coordinator and others in town should be consulted.

Town Administrator Paul Dawson said unless a local BYOB restriction is in place, state law gives businesses the option of allowing patrons to arrive with their own alcohol. “Technically it’s allowed absent a policy that says it’s not,” he said. But since the town owns the Music Hall, the board has final authority on the matter.

Selectman noted there were also questions on liability insurance that had to be answered.

Susan, who will retire on Nov. 28, said he wanted to see if the idea was possible. He assured Selectmen he would take any necessary precautions.

“I will not do anything in Marion or Mattapoisett to ruin my reputation,” Suzan said.
