Selectmen 'shocked' by $50,000 change on Town Meeting article

Selectmen alerted voters to a $50,000 change in an article to be voted on at Special Town Meeting on Monday.

The article is to appropriate $50,000 towards the purchase of a 27-acre parcel of land on the west side of Brandt Island Road, part of the larger $6 million, 400-acre Nasketucket Bay Land Conservation Project with the Buzzards Bay Coalition.

Originally, Selectmen understood that the money would be reimbursed through a grant.

“The $50,000 represents a good faith on the part of Mattapoisett to move forward with the acquisition,” said Selectmen Chair Tyler Macallister.

Now, however, Selectmen said they were “shocked” to find out that the money would not be reimbursed. A representative from the Buzzards Bay Coalition explained the change to Selectmen and the Finance Committee last Thursday.

“I just feel it’s a little late now,” said Selectman Paul Silva. “We’ll let the voters make their decision on Monday night.”

If grants and donations from other areas, such as the USDA and private funding, fall through, the money would not be spent, said Selectmen.

But if all goes as planned, the town will be asked for an estimated $128,000 in the future.

“There are a whole lot of pieces to the puzzle that all need to come together, and if they do then the acquisition will be made,” said Macallister.
