Several towns battle Vaughan Hill Road blaze
A Vaughan Hill Road home was destroyed after becoming engulfed in flames Thursday morning.
It’s unclear if there were any injuries or what caused the fire.
The fire broke out at approximately 11 a.m. at 125 Vaughan Hill Road. Crews from Rochester, Marion, Mattapoisett and Acushnet were still on the scene as of 12:30 p.m.
Rochester police closed a portion of Vaughan Hill Road to allow fire trucks, ambulances and water tankers access to the scene, located at the end of a long dirt driveway.
Two fire trucks were able to park near the home at the end of the driveway. A third truck was forced to back up and park on Vaughan Hill Road because there was limited space.
A yellow hose connected to fire trucks stationed on Vaughan Hill Road provided first responders with additional water to fight the blaze.
Flames could be seen darting out from inside the home onto the roof. Firefighters stationed on ladders attempted to subdue the fire from the outside with water. Crews also entered the home in an effort to stop the fire.
Smoke, thick and black at times, limited firefighters ability to see as a northeast breeze fanned the flames.
“I got flames over here,” one firefighter was overheard shouting. “Tons of flames over here.”
Residents of the home were seen ushering several dogs inside a barn for safety. The owners of the home are listed as Peter and Carolyn MacGregor.
Arnie Johnson of Rochester watched the smoke rise above the tree line on Vaughan Hill Road.
“I heard a fire truck coming down the road and then saw the smoke,” he said.
The MacGregors are long time residents of town, he said.
“They are a great family,” Johnson said.
