Sippican School student wins ‘golden ticket,’ donates award to Marion Council on Aging
MARION — A Sippican Elementary School third grader won a “golden ticket” from a Rhode Island nonprofit, earning $500 for her and $5,000 for the school.
Rose O’Brien won the award in a random drawing for “Feinstein Jr. Scholar,” children who have participated in the foundation’s Leadership School program.
O’Brien chose to donate the $500 to the Marion Council on Aging.
She said “she wanted to donate to the elderly in her community because she helps to take care of her grandmother, and her family often speaks about taking care of the elderly as they once cared for their families,” according to an Old Rochester Regional news release.
“"This incredible opportunity will enrich our school community and empower our students to reach new heights,” Principal Lynn Dessert said in the news release. “It's a chance to share good deeds and honor the valuable contributions of our elders by supporting the Marion Council on Aging.”
Based in Cranston, Rhode Island, the Feinstein Foundation was founded by Alan Shawn Feinstein in 1991 to “to recognize and encourage young people to do good deeds and be kind whenever possible,” the release said.
O’Brien received a certificate from the Marion School Committee on Thursday, Nov. 5. Her picture will also appear on television on WPRI.
“It is heartening to see young people like her understand and act upon the importance of respecting and caring for our community's elders," Superintendent Mike Nelson said.
