Snowmobile riders, thieves complicate emergency aid

While most people kept to the governor's driving ban and stayed off the streets of Rochester during the snowstorm, Police Chief Paul Magee says a few rabble-rousers complicated cleanup efforts.

Magee said a number of people were spotted on ATVs and snowmobiles in the midst of the deluge.

While officers did not have time to stop most of the riders, Magee said one person’s ride ended abruptly on Alley Road.

After seeing a police cruiser, one snowmobile driver attempted to flee. The driver turned around to check on the cruiser and drove into a tree, reported Magee.

"It created a mess for us," he said. "The tree had power wires attached to it. It took hours to clear."

The rider was taken to the hospital and "will be cited for a number of violations," said Magee.

The chief also said three stop signs were cut down and stolen during the storm.

“Frustratingly, they were at main intersections,” said Magee, who assumed the signs will be sold for scrap.

The Highway Department is working to replace the signs this week.
