Students in the first edition of Marion Recreation's summer art program sketched out a strong start for the program on July 20.

The 13 students spent four days creating their works of art, which were based on several influential artists. Amongst the displays were pieces fashioned after work by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and colored-glass artist Dale Chihuly.

In addition, the students also designed dreamcatchers and decorated high-heel shoes (or sneakers, in the case of the class's boys), and created convincing imitation-metal statues out of wire and duct tape.

The students explained their favorite art pieces.

Brooke Morrell's imitation-metal statuette was modeled after a figure doing gynmastics. "I like doing gymnastics and splits, and this reminded me of those," she explained.

Natalie Medeiros held up a weaving piece done using basing sewing techniques, and said, "I thought sewing was really hard, but it was fun. My nana is really good at sewing," she continued, "so doing this reminds me of her."

Savannah Morris proudly displayed her handmade dreamcatcher. "It's a little like sewing," she said. "It's not like you can say that you bought one of these at a store, you made it yourself."
