SWAT Team to be regular presence at ORR

Forget the Genius Bar, Old Rochester Regional High School is going to have its own help desk comprised of students.

The Students Working to Advance Technology Team will include several students in each period who will help solve the school’s tech woes. The ORR School Committee approved the new class on Wednesday night.

“I think this will lead to college opportunities, career opportunities,” said ORR Principal Mike Devoll of the year-long class.

The SWAT Team will help to fix computer issues in the high school and junior high, including faculty and staff requests sent to the technology office. The students, under supervision from the school librarian, will also help with multimedia presentations and will blog about their experiences. Devoll said the SWAT Team will descend on the school next week.

On the heels of the next generation science standards approved by the state in April, the seventh and eighth grade science teachers are updating their curriculum.

The School Committee approved the first trimester of the new plan that includes more technology and engineering as well as hands-on experiments and collaboration.

The new standards won’t be reflected in standardized testing for two years, but ORR School Committee Chair said, “We are supporting a curriculum that is bringing us to the future.”
