Tabor Academy students service day goes worldwide

May 2, 2013

Tabor Academy students were deployed to the four corners of the world this week as the school held a day of community service.

Dressed in safety green, some students picked up roadside litter, while others did work in Marion Village.

Still others volunteered at schools in New Bedford, worked on a garden at the YMCA in Dartmouth, and sorted recycling in Wareham.

In planning the event, Director of Community Service Lauren Corliss wanted the service to go beyond the South Coast. “We had a discussion about a worldwide day of service, including alums and newly enrolled students,” said Corliss.

Recently accepted students in Thailand, China, Germany, Japan, and beyond were encouraged to find ways to serve around their hometowns.

“To this point, we’ve had three to five kids who have shared pictures and write-ups that they have done in their international communities,” Corliss said. “It’s a way to get involved in what we do at Tabor on the early side.”

The day, which was revived after a one-year hiatus, was also a success at home. Among their completed projects, students and faculty members on the road cleanup team collected two pickup truck loads of trash and recyclables from Point Road and County Road. Another group finished a top to bottom cleanup of the kitchen at the Congregational Church of Marion.

Corliss said more service days are likely to be held in the future. “We have had a request from kids that would like to do it more than once a year,” she said. “They really enjoyed it.”
