Three boats sink, no one injured
Aug 6, 2011
According to AHM/Shellfish Officer Isaac Perry, three boats sank in the area Friday: at Aucoot Cove, at Old Landing and off Bird Island. Although the incident off Bird Island did involve people, Perry says no one was injured. The other two boats were moored in the area.
"The biggest factor sounds to be neglect on the owner's part," Perry said. "They were old boats in disrepair."
He also added the Marion Harbormaster is filing a report on the incidents.
"This isn't uncommon," Perry said. "Many of these boats aren't being used or haven't been used in years. The batteries in a bilge pump run low and with leaks and waves, water just finds its way in. And after a period of time it fills up and the boat goes under."
