TONIGHT: Town Meeting pushes bike path forward
Voters will get the chance to push community bike path plans forward at Mattapoisett’s Fall Town Meeting tonight—Monday, Nov. 27.
There are three items on the agenda directly pertaining to the bike path: the acceptance of a portion of Reservation Road as a public way, the acceptance of a portion of Goodspeed Island Road as a public way and the designation of $55,000 for funding costs necessary for the bike path.
The area on Reservation Road extends from the golf course down to the beach. Mattapoisett Town Administrator Mike Gagne said that the state highway department requires the town to accept the road as a public way in order to make improvements.
“There is going to be substantial improvement where the road comes from the bike path and down,” Gagne said. “We’re going to be widening it, putting drainage in...We’ve always wanted to fix that lower section that’s problematic.”
On Goodspeed Island Road, the town has an agreement with homeowners that they can use the street to access their homes—but it was never accepted as a public way.
With the acceptance of the road as a public way, the street will be open to pedestrians and bikes as well.
However, Gagne said, there will still be a restriction on vehicular traffic for those who don’t live there.
Lastly, residents will vote on spending $55,000 to fund costs associated with securing the necessary easements, rights of way, relocations, restorations or any other costs to secure the location of the bike path.
Gagne said that plans for the bike path are currently on schedule, and that he expects the project to go out to bid in May 2018.
“All the plans are good all the permits are coming along,” he said. “We’re expecting to start construction next September.”
Town Meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Old Rochester Regional High School auditorium.
