Transition class seeks help to start EmpowORR Garden
Old Rochester Regional’s transition class is getting ready to grow.
On Wednesday, teacher Becky Okolita received School Committee approval to use a 30- by 90- foot space behind ORR for the new EmpowORR Garden.
Okolita’s class is made up of special education students ages 18 to 22, who learn work, life and social skills. Already this year, the first for the program, her four students have started a coffee business within the school. Another student is selling items she sewed.
“It’s important to empower students for skills for a successful future,” Okolita said.
The garden, and hopefully a greenhouse, will be handicapped accessible and will be a connection point with the community, said Okolita, who is seeking funding and expertise from local residents and businesses.
She said gardeners from Marion have already stepped up to help, and the program received a $500 grant from Cape Cod 5. More funds and supplies are needed to develop the garden.
