Local author dives deep into ocean research

MATTAPOISETT — Author Michelle Cusolito will join the Mattapoisett Woman’s Club for a presentation about her book “Surrounded by Water: Life on a Research Vessel in the Middle of the Atlantic.”

The program will take place Thursday, Oct. 15 at 11:30 a.m. at Reynard Hall, inside the Mattapoisett Congregational Church. The event is open to the public. 

During her presentation, Cusolito will take attendees behind the scenes of life aboard a research vessel, sharing stories and photographs from her time at sea with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. 

She will offer an insider’s look at what it’s like to live and work on a research ship, from moving aboard and unpacking equipment to weathering massive storms in the middle of the North Atlantic.

Attendees will also learn about new technologies being used to study the deep ocean and will have the opportunity to see photographs of deep-sea animals that few people ever encounter in person.
