The Mattapoisett School Committee welcomed Charles Egan as Old Hammondtown School’s interim principal on Monday night.

Egan, a retired principal, was chosen from 40 candidates, and he has 20 years of experience in school administration.

Egan recently retired as principal at the Hanover Middle School where he worked since 2007. Prior to being the principal in Hanover, Egan was the assistant principal in Holliston, from 1996 to 2007, and also held posts as dean of students at Nashoba Regional High School in the 90s as well as the athletic director in Franklin, from 1988 to 1992.

Egan started his teaching career in Natick in 1979. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Fitchburg State College and a masters in education from Northeastern University. Egan resides in Mansfield.

“We feel that Mr. Egan brings the qualities necessary for us to continue the great work that happens in the Mattapoisett School System,” said Superintendent Doug White.

Egan, who has continued to take coursework in education, said, “I was very impressed on my visit to the school. Walking around the school, you can tell it’s a very caring, child-centered environment.”

Egan will overlap for a few days with outgoing Principal Matt D’Andrea, who is leaving to take the position of assistant superintendent at Martha’s Vineyard public schools.

“I’ve extremely enjoyed my time here with my fellow administrators, teachers, and especially the kids,” said D’Andrea.
