Marion Christmas tree take two!

May 24, 2013

Come this December, Marion won’t have to worry about having a Charlie Brown Christmas tree in Bicentennial Park.

After the Tree and Parks Committee raised $2,000 to replace the ailing blue spruce that had been the town’s Christmas tree since 1991, the new concolor fir purchased to replace it was damaged in transit.

When it was determined that the new tree would not survive, Susannah Davis, a member of the tree committee, decided to donate one that her father planted 12 years ago.

Davis, a landscape designer, said the tree committee used to give out seedlings on Arbor Day for those who helped with town cleanup. She brought her dad, who passed away three years ago, one of the “twigs.”

“He put it right out in the middle of the yard. I was sure the thing was going to get mowed over,” said Davis.

When she found out that the replacement tree couldn’t be saved, Davis said donating her dad’s carefully tended tree, which also happens to be a concolor fir, made sense.

“I had to think about it for about a minute, and it seemed to all fall into place,” said Davis. “It felt like the right thing to do, and I know my dad would have been pleased.”

David Mendell and his team from Bartlett Tree Experts spent more than five hours digging the tree up. With help from Robert Pittsley, of the Department of Public Works, they moved the 12-foot tree and planted it at Bicentennial Park.

Davis said the tree will be watered regularly to make sure it thrives in its new location.

“It’s practically disease free,” she said. “It’s a tough tree.”
