Girls track in race for conference title

Jan 27, 2014

With two meets left in the regular season, the Old Rochester Regional High School girls indoor track team is gunning for a fourth consecutive South Coast Conference title.

The team defeated Fairhaven last week 66-20. It takes on Wareham Thursday night and hope to extend its conference win-streak to 31 consecutive games.

Now in her fourth year as an indoor track athlete, Senior Paige Santos said the team’s closeness has helped keep the streak alive.

“We’re all really good friends. We’re really hard workers. A lot of the freshman girls step up time and time again,” she said. “We just really love track.”

That love led to the shuttles hurdle team, made up of Santos, Bailey Truesdale, Abby Adams and Morgan DaSilva, to beat the high school’s record with a time of 36.3 seconds earlier this month.

Santos also broke a school record in the high jump earlier this year when she cleared the bar at 5 feet 4 inches.

Last week’s win puts the team’s record at 6-0 for the conference and 7-0 overall. Fairhaven had an undefeated record before falling to Old Rochester.

The girls next meet is Thursday, Jan. 30 against Wareham in New Bedford. The team competes against Seekonk on Monday, Feb. 3.
