New assistant principal named in Mattapoisett
Mattapoisett schools will have an assistant principal next year with current Center School Principal Rose Bowman taking over as principal for both elementary schools in town.
The new assistant principal is a familiar face to faculty and students. On Tuesday, Superintendent Doug White announced that current Old Hammondtwon School fifth grade science teacher Kevin Tavares will step into the position.
“We look forward to working with him,” White said at the Mattapoisett School Committee’s meeting on Monday.
Tavares began teaching in 1994. He holds a master’s degree in education from Fitchburg State College and lives in Mattapoisett. White said Tavares’ experience will benefit the school as the district puts together a new five-year plan.
“He brings experience and knowledge in the area of science and social and emotional learning,” White said.
Tavares will start his new position on July 1.
After former Principal Matthew D’Andrea resigned from Old Hammondtown School in Sept., Charles Egan filled in as Interim Principal.
